A cost-effective serpentine micromixer utilizing ellipse curve

Due to high mixing performance and simple geometry structure, serpentine micromixer is one typical passive that has been widely investigated. Traditional zigzag square-wave micromixers can achieve sufficient mixing, but tend induce significant pressure drop. The excessive drop means more energy consumption, which leads low cost-performance of mixing. To mitigate drop, a novel utilizing ellipse curve proposed. While fluids flowing through microchannels, the flow directions keep continuous changing. Therefore, Dean vortices are induced throughout whole path. Numerical simulation visualization experiments conducted at Reynolds number (Re) ranging from 0.1 100. varies with changing curvature in different curves, local numbers calculated for quantitative evaluation. results suggest larger eccentricity induces stronger vortices, thus better be obtained. A parameter, named cost (Mec), proposed evaluate micromixers. Compared zigzag, other improved micromixers, produces lower while have capability maintain excellent performance. proved cost-effective rapid complex microfluidic systems.
